The Residenze Digitali – Digital Residencies project was created in 2020 from an idea by the Artistic Residency Centre of Tuscany (Armunia – CapoTrave/Kilowatt), which has since extended the partnership to the Marche Association for Theatrical Activities AMAT, the Artistic Residency Centre of Emilia-Romagna (L’arboreto – Teatro Dimora │ La Corte Ospitale), the ZONA K Association in Milan, the Piemonte dal Vivo Foundation – Lavanderia a Vapore, C.U.R.A. – Centre for Artistic Residencies Umbria (La Mama Umbria Umbria International – Gestioni Cinematografiche e Teatrali/ZUT – Centro Teatrale Umbro – Micro Teatro Terra Marique – Indisciplinarte), the Dance and Performing Arts production centre Fuorimargine in Cagliari and the Association Quarantasettezeroquattro (In\Visible Cities – Multimedia Urban Festival) in Gorizia.
The aim is to stimulate performing artists to explore digital spaces, as a further or different declination of their authorial research.
Through a call for proposals launched once a year, support is given to artistic projects related to the languages of contemporary performance, to be created directly for the digital environment, or which find in it a functional and effective environment for the expression of the artistic idea. It is not a question of promoting readings or video recordings of existing or future plays or performances, but rather of investing in artistic projects that see their ideal habitat in the online space, and that envisage an interactive way to relate to an online audience.
During the months where the winning projects of the annual call are developed, the artists are followed and monitored by the Residenze Digitali partners, as well as receive financial support for their creation, and being tutored by digital creation experts Marcello Cualbu, Laura Gemini, Anna Maria Monteverdi, and Federica Patti.
The project includes a final online showcase open to the public, which is held every year in November, in an event called “La settimana delle Residenze Digitali”, the Digital Residency Week.
With this action, the Artistic Residency Centre of Tuscany and its partners do not want to give up their mission of welcoming artists in residence at their facilities, but rather want to explore a further opportunity for creation that opens up new formal and conceptual challenges, produces innovative artistic content and can stand alongside the usual forms of live performance.
In 2021, in its second edition, Residenze Digitali was a finalist for the Critical Network Award.
